Auction house Rops, from Namur, Belgium, sell on 21 June 2015 a "Portrait of a lady, 17th century" estimated at 800 to 1,200 Euro.
It is a portrait of Amalia van Solms, wife of Frederik Hendrik of Orange (topic of another recent blog post), taken from an original by Willem van Mierevelt (just like in that other post) from ca. 1640, now in the The Hague Historical Museum. There exists another version of our current portrait, with the exact same "cutout" of the Mierevelt, so it may be that the one for sale is either by the same hand or a copy after that copy.
The copy was painted by Wybrand de Geest ca. 1655, and is very similar though just a tad better than the one for sale now. It is kept in the Dutch museum Muiderslot. If it is from the same period, it should be worth closer to 5,000 Euro (certainly if it is by de Geest as well); if it is a later copy, the estimate may be about right. UPDATE: sold for 6,000 Euro, close to my estimate.
