Jackson's, from Iowa, sells on 16 June 2015 a "Continental School, 19th century" removal from the cross, "ca. 1880", estimated at $200 to $300.
It is a copy of a painting by Constantino Brumidi (1805-1880), an Italian painter who lived in the US from 1849 until his death. He is best known for his many, many frescoes in the Capitol in Washington DC. The current work was one of the traditional 14 Stations of the Cross he painted for the Church of Saint Stephen in New York, his other major work.
Whether the painting for sale is an original by Brumidi, or (more likely) a copy, is unclear. If it really dates from 1880 or earlier though, I would estimate it higher than the $200 given, and would expect it to make closer to $1,000. If it is a real Brumidi, it would be worth a lot more, closer to $10,000, but hoping for that is a big gamble. UPDATE: sold for $325, just above high estimate, so the auctioneer was a lot closer than my estimate for it.
