"Old Master, 17th-18th c." is copy after Bassano

Campo, from Belgium, sells on 31 May 2016 an "Old Master, 17th / 18th century" Winter scene, estimated at 5,000 to 8,000 Euro.

It is the same composition (but in a different version) I already discussed in a post from February, then attributed to Vrancx, but in both cases a copy after one of the most popular works of Bassano. This one is slightly overestimated and will probably be worth 2,000 to 3,000 Euro instead.

  1. At Adam's there was recently a lot (277), a surprisingly close copy after Jan Steen, I wonder what is your opinion of it. It sold below min. It is not identical to the original but from the photo provided I would have trouble to decide which one is better. Could it be a workshop copy?

P.S. sorry for spamming this blog item, I couldn't find your e-mail.

  2. I have now added an "e-mail me" function to the right, hope that helps! As for the Jan Steen, it is a very good copy, but compared to https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9a/Jan_Havicksz._Steen_-_Het_Sint_Nicolaasfeest_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg I still think it is a copy and not a workshop version (but it's a close call). Some details (like the bread at the bottom left) are too flat, not lifelike enough. It's a close call though, and it's strange that it didn't even reach the minimum estimate as it looks to be certainly worth as much.
