Cheffins, from Great Britain, sells on 8 September 2016 a "French School, early 19th century" miniature inscribed "Les priseurs Boilly", which they translate as "The auctioneers Boilly". It is estimated at £300 to £400.
The watercolour on ivory painting is a copy after works by Louis-Léopold Boilly (1761-1845), one of the great French caricaturists (and very good portrait painter) of the age.
He created multiple depictions of people taking snuff, often reproduced as popular engravings. Other similar works have people smoking pipes or eating oysters. They are clearly, even as engravings, of much higher quality than the miniature for sale, which is a work after Boilly, not one by him. Still, as an amusing genre scene typical of the period, it should be worth the estimate.
